Source: Date:2025年12月01日

On November 12 local time, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tabonous Road Project in Kiribati—undertaken by The First Engineering Bureau of CREC—was successfully held, marking the official commencement of construction.

The Tabonous Road Project is located on the Tarawa Atoll in Kiribati, with a total length of approximately 28.6 km. The project mainly involves upgrading the existing two-lane coral-stone-bound road into a two-lane geocell concrete pavement road. Construction works include site clearing, embankment filling, excavation and treatment of existing road sections, coral gravel sub-base construction, geocell concrete pavement construction, roadbed drainage ditch works, retaining wall construction, and road marking.

It is reported that the Tabonous Road is a long-awaited major project for local residents. Once completed and opened to traffic, it will strongly promote infrastructure development in Kiribati, improve the quality of life for residents across the islands, and create a safer, more reliable, and climate-resilient transportation system.
