Construction Begins on the Tabonobu Road Project in Kiribati

On November 12 local time, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Tabonobu Road Project in Kiribati, undertaken by The First Engineering Bureau of CREC.

More than 300 participants attended the ceremony, including Tekeiua Tarati, Minister of Infrastructure of Kiribati; Betairo Baramo, Mayor of Tabonobu; representatives from the Southeast Asia Branch and the Fourth Company of The First Engineering Bureau of CREC; officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Tabonobu Municipal Government; community elders; project staff; and local residents.

Minister Tarati praised the project as another remarkable milestone for Tabonobu and expressed gratitude on behalf of the Kiribati government and its people for the deep involvement of The First Engineering Bureau of CREC in Kiribati’s infrastructure development. He commended the bureau’s swift mobilization and strong commitment to contract performance, expressing confidence that, with its extensive experience and technical expertise, it will deliver a high-quality project on schedule for the benefit of the Kiribati people.

During the ceremony, representatives from the Tabonobu Municipal Government and The First Engineering Bureau of CREC exchanged gifts to symbolize lasting friendship. Community elders and guest representatives delivered speeches and laid the foundation stone for the project. A local dance troupe performed traditional dances to bestow good wishes upon the project.

The Tabonobu Road Upgrade Project is located on the Tabiteuea Atoll in Kiribati. It involves upgrading an existing two-lane coral-mud road surface into a two-lane geocell concrete road. The project starts at Kabuna Village on the eastern side of the atoll and ends at Takaman Village on the western side, with a total length of approximately 28.6 kilometers and a contract duration of 690 days.
